7 Reasons Why We Die of Heart Disease
According to the US Surgeon General, heart attacks and strokes are highly preventable. In fact, seven of ten Americans who die each year, die of a preventable chronic disease such as heart disease and diabetes [1]. A former US Surgeon General, David Satcher, said, “Currently, 95 percent of the health care dollars in the US are spent on treating disease, with relatively little attention paid to preventing disease, which should be a national priority [2].”
Here are seven things we’re doing wrong…
We Smoke
The risk of dying of a heart attack is four times higher in people who smoke than in those who don’t smoke. Many of us are under the impression that the major danger from smoking is cancer but that’s not quite true; smoking is the major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and cardiovascular disease. In fact, about 40 percent of deaths caused by cardiovascular disease are due to smoking.
We Don’t Walk
Over the past 50 years, health professionals have examined the association between physical activity and the risk for heart disease. The findings consistently reveal that people who are physically active have half the risk for heart attacks than people who are not active. Those studies show also that at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, such as brisk walking, on most days of the week, is sufficient to reduce the risk of heart attack [3].
We Eat Too Much Saturated Fat
There’s a reason why health authorities advise us to limit the consumption of saturated fat:
Saturated fat is the most rigid of all fats and is solid at room temperature. Solid fats are hard to dissolve and can easily get stuck in your arteries.
When you eat too much saturated fat, your liver keeps producing cholesterol and you end up with much more cholesterol than you need.
Limit saturated fat consumption to less than 10 percent of the total calories ingested per day.
We Ingest Too Many Foods Containing Hydrogenated Oils or Trans Fats
Hydrogenated oils or trans fats as they are usually called, are produced artificially by injecting molecules of hydrogen in vegetable oils, a process called hydrogenation. Through this process, the oil, which is liquid at room temperature, changes its original form and becomes solid. In other words, it becomes saturated fat. In addition, the unnatural shapes of trans fats cause our cells to become malformed and to malfunction. And that includes the cells of the heart and the arteries.
Read the food label and avoid products which contain trans fats or hydrogenated fats.
We Don’t Eat Enough Fruits and Vegetables
We know that people who consume plant foods regularly have a lower incidence of heart disease than those who don’t include them in their diet.
Fruits and vegetables contain phytochemicals, nonnutritive chemicals found in plant foods that protect their host plants from infections and microbial invasions. However, phytochemicals are also crucial in protecting humans against many diseases, including heart disease.
We Have Too Much Stress
Eighty percent of the population suffers from some kind of symptoms caused by stress which many times end up in illnesses such as high blood pressure—a risk factor for heart attack.
One of the reasons why you succumb to disease easily is because tension reduces your capacity to adapt to today’s changing environment.
We Drink too Much Alcohol
Avoid high alcohol consumption. 5 to 7 percent of the hypertension we see in people is due to high alcohol intake. The World Health Organization estimates that almost 2/3 of strokes and 50 percent of heart attacks are caused by high blood pressure.
The good news is, Bios Life is here to help.

Bios Life Can Help You Too
I’m a pharmacist and diabetes educator in St. Petersburg, Florida, and have had approximately eight years experience using BiosLife2 with my diabetic patients. Typically, most people think BiosLife2 will only help type 2 diabetics, however, I’ve found a greater benefit from using it with patients with type 1 diabetes. And that is simply because of the ability of BiosLife2 to level the blood sugar.
The problem that occurs with people who have type 1 diabetes, especially children, is that their lifestyles and their activities cause such a fluctuation in their use of glucose, metabolism of glucose and the amount of insulin they require that it’s very hard to level those blood sugars. I’ve found that by consuming the soluble fiber in BiosLife2, this helps moderate the absorption of the glucose, makes it stay longer, pretty much giving them a slow-release form of glucose, so that they don’t have those swings.
As we all know, low blood sugar for a type 1 diabetic is probably more harmful than high blood sugar. The ability to help stave off those lows with the Bios Life 2 gives them an opportunity to have better control over their high glucose. In addition, it will help with the high glucose. And as children tend to eat a little more irregularly and irrationally than adults do, taking the Bios Life 2 before they eat will help temper some of the effects that cause high blood sugar as well.

Doctors Bios Life Success Story
Bios Life 2 was introduced to me by a colleague who indicated it might benefit my husband who had a heart attack in 1987 at the age of 40. He was diagnosed with high cholesterol at that point. He tried two different anti-cholesterol medications which were not successful in lowering his cholesterol. Four years ago he was also diagnosed with diabetes and is insulin dependent. Ten weeks ago he started on Bios Life 2. Since that time he has had his cholesterol checked twice and lowered his cholesterol almost 100 points. His hemoglobin has been the most stable in the four years since he has been diabetic and has better energy. We are sold on the product and the business.

Charlie’s Bios Life Story
I was introduced to the Unicity products by another pharmacist. As far as my own experiences with the products, they are excellent — especially Bios Life. Since I have been on that, which as only been about four or five months now, I have not experienced any hypoglycemia, no nervousness, no irritability since the first month that I was on the product. Secondly, my level of cholesterol has dropped. I had a profile run before I started. One month after starting on the product, my cholesterol profile dropped from 218 to 204, triglycerides from 237 to 108. Previously my ratio was in the bad spot, it was 6. 4. But after being on Bios for one month, my ratio dropped to 5. 1. The HDL went up 20% from 34 to 40. So, essentially, I’m in much better shape, plus maybe eight or ten pound lost–and I’m not on a diet regimen. I still eat all those things that I like to eat.

Bios Life Testimonial
As as airline pilot, I receive a medical every six months. Last February I saw my Flight Surgeon (who is now a part of our Unicity Network through his wife) and the subject of cholesterol came up. I had been taking Fenofibrite (a typical Lipodryl/statin type drug) for elevated cholesterol. As I do not like taking chemicals, I asked the doctor if there were any other alternatives. He said he had been researching a company for about eight months, and since he has always been interested in the nutritional side of medicine, he said he was very impressed with this company, had spoken to their experts and was quite confident in their natural products.
He said I could try the Bios Life ® 2 which has been very successful in lowering cholesterol. After taking Bios Life® 2 for about two months, I had a blood test and went back to see my Flight Surgeon. He was very pleased to report that my cholesterol, which had still been on the high side taking the medication, was much improved and that my LDL/HDL ratio was terrific! Subsequent to that, he said that I could probably stop taking the medication and just take the Bios Life® 2 and we would test my results at a later date. I said that I had already stopped taking the medication when he told me about the Bios Life® 2 back in February!
He was amazed and since then I have only been taking the Bios Life® 2 with great success. Thank you Unicity Network for all the fantastic natural products available to help everyone!

Bios Life Success Story
For eleven years, I have struggled with diabetes. I have had seven eye surgeries, have lost my left eye, and have diminished vision in my right eye due to diabetic retinopathy. In July of last year, I was taking 220 units of insulin a day. I had gained 50 pounds and still had blood sugar levels running from 190 to 390. My doctor took me off insulin and started me on maximum doses of Glucophage and Amaryl. After several months, he told me these drugs were not working. I was scared.
Meanwhile my business partner told me about a nonprescription, natural product that was helping other people control their blood sugar levels. At this point, what did I have to lose? I took a packet of Bios Life 2 and a list of ingredients to my endocrinologist. He said, “There is nothing in this that can hurt you.” On January 9th I started taking Rx for Life (containing Bios Life® 2) while on Amaryl and Glucophage with no insulin. In less than one week, my blood sugar was 153, in two weeks under 100 and have had blood sugar readings of less than 80. I reduced the Glucophage by 2/3 and Amaryl to 1/2 of the original dose So far, I have lost 32 pounds.
My last examination by my eye surgeon showed no new leakage and no new bleeding in my eyes. I am saving the vision I have left. I needed a miracle and I thank God for guiding me to this.

What is HDL Cholesterol?
What is HDL?
HDL is getting all the buzz lately—but what is it?
HDL is High-Density Lipoprotein—or “good” cholesterol. High levels of HDL seem to protect against heart attack. Low levels of HDL (less than 40 mg/dL) also increase the risk of heart disease. Medical experts think that HDL tends to carry cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver, where it’s passed from the body.
In practical terms, the bottom line is simple: The higher your HDL cholesterol, the better. Data from the Framingham Heart Study suggests that raising HDL by 10 mg/dl has a similar reduction for the risk of heart disease than lowering LDL by 60 mg/dl.
In studies presented at the American Heart Association’s 7th Annual Conference, Dr. Peter Verdegem, Unicity Chief Science Officer, presented clinical evidence that showed that Unicity’s Bios Life increased HDL levels by 26.3% in a group of statin users that had HDL levels below 40 mg/dl at baseline. Prescription statin drugs usually treat cholesterol by lowering LDL levels, but do nothing to raise HDL levels.
What is “Bad” Cholesterol?
Low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, is known as “bad” cholesterol. When too much LDL cholesterol circulates in the blood, it can slowly build up in the inner walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain. Together with other substances, it can form plaque, a thick, hard deposit that can narrow the arteries and make them less flexible. This condition is known as atherosclerosis. If a clot forms and blocks a narrowed artery, a heart attack or a stroke can result.

How HDL Helps
At first, scientists believed that HDL was simply a garbage collector that picked up cholesterol from an artery’s walls and delivered it to the liver for disposal. That’s still considered the main role of HDL, but research is starting to suggest that HDL can help protect the heart in many ways…
Reverse Cholesterol Transport. HDL latches onto LDL embedded in an artery wall, lugs it back into the bloodstream, and carries it to the liver. The liver collects cholesterol from the HDL particles, packages it into bile salts and bile acids, and dumps it into the intestines and rids it from the body.
Antioxidant Activity. LDL cholesterol in the artery wall is bombarded by oxygen free radicals, which turns it into oxidized LDL cholesterol. Oxidized cholesterol is the stuff that’s actually responsible for arterial damage—and research shows that HDL can help protect LDL cholesterol from free radicals.
Anti-inflammatory Action. HDL helps to quiet the inflammation of an atherosclerotic plaque. Elevated levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) reflect the inflammation of such a plaque and HDL may neutralize CRP’s tendency to perpetuate the inflammatory cycle.
Antithrombotic Activity. Plaque rupture triggers the formation of an artery-blocking blood clot. By halting the flow of oxygen-rich blood, the clot kills heart muscle cells (heart attack) or brain cells (stroke). HDL reduces clot formation and accelerates the healing process that dissolves clots.
Endothelial Function. Blood vessels plagued with atherosclerosis sustain other damage. In particular, the endothelial cells lining the arteries fail to produce normal amounts of nitric oxide, the chemical that allows arteries to dilate (widen) when tissues need more oxygen. HDL helps preserve nitric oxide production and protect endothelial function.
How Much Does HDL Help?
The Framingham Heart Study was responsible for many landmark discoveries about HDL cholesterol, and the Physicians’ Health Study helped confirm that HDL was protective. Data continues to show that the good cholesterol is very good indeed!
Heart Disease. Low HDL levels are associated with an increased risk of heart attacks, while high levels are protective. According to the Framingham Heart Study, cardiac risk rises sharply as HDL cholesterol levels fall below 40 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). In general, each 1 mg/dL rise in an HDL cholesterol level can be expected to cut cardiac risk by 2% to 3%.
Stroke. Strokes come in many forms, but the most common type, ischemic stroke, shares many risk factors with heart attack. High HDL cholesterol levels reduce the risk of stroke; in several studies, HDL cholesterol is a much better predictor of risk than LDL cholesterol, particularly in people older than 75.
Gender Differences Related to Cholesterol
Women benefit from cholesterol-lowering activities as much as men do. Beyond age 45, a greater percentage of women have high cholesterol levels than men, and heart disease has emerged as the leading cause of death among women.
It has also been shown that HDL levels tend to drop in women who have just given birth, and that this reduction can continue for as long as 10 years. However, women are far less likely to seek or receive treatment for high cholesterol. In addition, studies have suggested that high LDL levels are not as significant a risk factor for women as for men.
Longevity. Several investigations suggest that high HDL levels are linked to longevity, particularly exceptional longevity. Other research links high levels of HDL cholesterol to preserved cognitive function in old age.
